The Art of Layered Lighting: Ambient, Task & Accent
Design

Professional lighting design always utilizes three layers. Ambient lighting provides the overall illumination—the base layer. Task lighting is focused light for specific activities like reading, cooking, or grooming. Accent lighting is used to highlight architectural features, artwork, or specific objects, adding depth and drama to the room. When all three layers are balanced and controlled independently via dimmers, you have total control over the environment and mood of the room.
